What is "racial profiling"?
Racial profiling is, for the most part, defined as when a particular race is singled out because of extremists. Racial profiling can often be compared to a witch hunt or the Red Scare. For example; after the destruction of 9/11, most Americans feared anyone from the Middle East.
Do police officers single out Middle Eastern Americans?
The answer is sadley yes. Police officers have oftened spyed on minority groups that are sometimes a threat. "I and other community members feel betrayed by our own police force, and the fact that it's the police singling us out for unfair treatment makes us all deeply concerned that other parts of society see us as suspect, too, even though we've done nothing wrong." How can we stop racial profiling?
Everybody can do their part to stop racial profiling. It is cruel to make fun of someone of a different race. So, when a friend starts making racist jokes about Middle Eastern Americans, don't laugh and tell your friend to stop it. Another action that be takin is to, quite simply, not judge them in the first place. Even this tiny action can make a change.
Is Congress attempting to make laws to prevent racial profiling?
Yes. Congress has in fact pushed through various laws. The House of Representatives has made the "End Racial Profiling Act of 2011", the "Racial Profiling Prevention Act", and "H.Res.55" (congress.org). Although, sometimes the bills are not able to be put into action. "10 years ago, Congress introduced then failed to pass the End Racial Profiling Act," stated Rights Working Group on change.org.
Do parents and teachers pass on racial profiling to children?
The answer again is yes. Children are given personalities from what their environment is like. This is what makes you and ourselves who we are. Here is an example. If a child grows in an area where a strong dislike for Middle Eastern Americans is present, the child will also. If that same child grows up in an area where some people racial profile Middle Eastern Americans, they will only have a slight dislike.
